End of Event Meme

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
I think it was hour 7 that was the most daunting. I took a break around lunch for lunch and to do some homework. I was ready to get back to reading after that and I just wasn't quite in the reading mood at that time. Especially since I had just finished reading a new Gallagher Girls book and I had to transition to the depressing A Monster Calls.

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
The Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter is very engaging and definitely kept me reading through the first fourth of the read-a-thon.

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
Reading sprints would be great! If there were some, I didn't see them and I'm sorry, but they would be fun!

4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
I signed up late last year and didn't have cheerleaders, but this year I signed up early and did. I thought it was so cool having people commenting on my blog and tweeting me!

5. How many books did you read?
I read 1 ⅔ books

6. What were the names of the books you read?
I read Out of Sight, Out of Time (Gallagher Girls book 5) and most of A Monster Calls

7. Which book did you enjoy most?
Out of Sight, Out of Time definitely!

8. Which did you enjoy least?
A Monster Calls is really depressing and, while it isn't bad, it probably wasn't the best book to read after an upbeat, action-packed contemporary book

9. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
I will definitely be participating next time and probably just as a reader. I would love to be a cheerleader, but I also really want to read and I don't know how well I can balance that.

The Mid-Event Survery

We are now on hour 14 (I think) of the Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon! A few hours ago we were supposed to be doing our mid-event surveys. I did not do it then (I was busy watching Sherlock), but I am ready to do it now. By the way, I did end up getting an honorable mention for my weird reading position! Anyway...

1. What are you reading right now?

I am currently reading A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

2. How many books have you read so far?

I have read 1 ½ books so far

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

I just need to finish the second half of A Monster Calls. I probably will sleep the rest of the time.

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

I did have to take some time to do Mandarin homework and clean, but I just try to enjoy those breaks and give myself a rest

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

How much I am able to read! I didn't do nearly as well last time.

That's all for now!

So long!

Weird Reading Positions Challenge

This mini-challenge is hosted over at Kristina Horner's blog.

http://kristinahorner.com/deweys-24-hour-readathon/

In this challenge you take a picture of yourself reading in a strange position. I enlisted Lia's help for this and ended up with this picture.

Of course I would try to read and play piano at the same time!

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon: update 1

We are now on hour 3, everyone! I am currently reading Out of Sight, Out of Time which is the fifth book in the Gallagher Girls series. I was already 46 pages through it when I started the read-a-Thon. In the past two hours I have managed to read 118 pages of it. I need to take a break for homework soon, but hopefully I can finish this book soon.

More updates to come!

So long!

Book Review: Can't Look Away by Donna Cooner

Torrey Grey is famous. At least, on the internet. Thousands of people watch her popular videos on fashion and beauty. But when Torrey's sister is killed in an accident -- maybe because of Torrey and her videos -- Torrey's perfect world implodes.

Now, strangers online are bashing Torrey. And at her new school, she doesn't know who to trust. Is queen bee Blair only being sweet because of Torrey's internet infamy? What about Raylene, who is decidedly unpopular, but seems accepts Torrey for who she is? And then there's Luis, with his brooding dark eyes, whose family runs the local funeral home. Torrey finds herself drawn to Luis, and his fascinating stories about El dio de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.

As the Day of the Dead draws near, Torrey will have to really look at her own feelings about death, and life, and everything in between. Can she learn to mourn her sister out of the public eye?

I've been looking forward to reading this book ever since I saw a review of it on YouTube. The whole concept sounding really interesting.

However, I was expecting something a bit lighter. I don't know why, but that was how I thought it was going to be. I don't think I read this book at the right time. I had just finished reading Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson which was a very dark contemporary. Both of these books had the idea of "ghosts" in the sense that they were feeling guilty about the death of a loved one and were "being haunted" by them. This wasn't anything against either of the books, they just shouldn't be read together.

Let's go over the stuff that I didn't like first.

I did not really like most of the characters. Torrey was annoying and superficial. I was really hoping that she would develop into a better person, but she really didn't. Luis was okay, but he wasn't great. He got his feelings hurt too easily. Both of the parents were aggravating. They were rather unrealistic. It was pretty obvious that Raylene was supposed to be the annoying side character, but she was done better than everyone else probably. The best character in the entire book was probably Miranda, Torrey's dead sister. The only problem was that we only got to see her in flashbacks. I loved hearing more about her, but the story was more often focused on Torrey trying to fit in with the popular crowd who was clearly using her.

That leads me to another point. I didn't like how the story was done. Some things should have been sped up, such as Torrey's plan to become popular. Some things should have been slowed down. What Torrey did at the end should have been extended. It was like the climax and ending happened in sixty pages! The "climax" did have much of a lead-in if you know what I mean. That made it not seem like a climax at all.

I really wish the whole YouTube and cyber-bullying thing had been more of a focus. The world of YouTube really intrigues me and I wanted to see how it was on the other side of the screen. We did get a few glimpses of this but not nearly enough.

The whole part with The Day of the Dead was just weird. If the author wanted to make that a major part of the book, I think she should have explained it a bit better. Why did they have this celebration? What was with all of the food? And most importantly...

WHY WAS TORREY SO OBSESSED WITH THE CREEPY MAKEUP?!

I don't know why this bothered me so much, but really! What was with that? It was creepy, not beautiful? Was I missing some hidden symbolism? Seriously!

Now, what did I like....

The few YouTube scenes were great!

So were the flashbacks!

Ummm....

...

I guess that's it!

This wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't great.

I'd give it 3 ½ stars and say that it was for ages 13 and up.

So long!

Book Review: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a

few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final

chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist

named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support

Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.

I usually don't read popular books.

I just don't.

I never understand why, but there is just something holding me back every time I want to pick up a hyped up book.

I have read a couple more recently (We Were Liars and If I Stay), but that was after the hype had died down.

I had heard so much about this book that it was strange actually reading it. I expected that I was going to love this book, just like everyone else I know. Everyone was always talking about how they cried so hard in the book and movie and how it was their favorite book ever. I was sure to like it!

Wrong.

I seriously don't think I have ever read a more overhyped book in my life.

I don't really mind romance in books and sometimes it almost adds to the book. However, when there is romance in books, I want there to be some decent action that overpowers the romantic aspects in the book. I want the romance to take a back seat when it comes to the adventure. The Fault in Our Stars did have some decent romance, but I wasn't a huge fan of it. The action was practically nonexistent. I know that this wasn't supposed to be an action/adventure type book, but something exciting other than the romance needed to happen. The cancer sections were the most interesting parts of the entire book!

I found John Green's writing style addicting. However, I still didn't find that it was as good as everyone said it was. I did like how he wrote his characters with flaws and quirks, but I wasn't that attached to Hazel. Augustus was okay, but Isaac was the coolest one. The whole scene where he was throwing eggs at the car was really good!

The sad thing was that I really wanted to be attached to these characters and I wanted to cry at the end. I was spoiled for the ending, but I thought I would still be sad at the end (kind of like If I Stay and We Were Liars). I was sad during the eulogy scene. Other than that I didn't really care that much. The whole book didn't have the effect that I wanted it to have on me.

I ended up giving this book 3 stars and I think that it is appropriate for 14 or 15 and up.

PS: Even though I didn't enjoy this book, I really did enjoy This Star Won't Go Out which is about the girl who John Green kind of based Hazel on. I highly recommend it. You can see my review for that here.

So long!

Challenge: Like This, Try This

Well, it's been a couple of days since I last posted. I started school on Wednesday and haven't posted since then. I did finish The Elements of Style on Tuesday night and I am now over 130 pages through The Fault in Our Stars.

Today I thought I'd do a challenge. This one is called Like This, Try This. If you would like a list of rules click here.

If you liked this...

You should try this...

Both of these books are very touching and are beautifully written. They both also contain a romantic subplot (if you're into that sort of thing...).

And that's it!

I hope to be updating soon and reading more, but until then...

Book Review: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

This book.

This book...

Wow...

This book was so good! It was such an interesting story. I loved how different this book was from anything else I've read. It was full of mystery and you were never sure of what was exactly going on.

Cadence was the main character and she was very interesting. I really felt that I was put in her mind (kind of like I was in Maze Runner). I felt so bad for her all throughout the book -- especially the end! I wasn't as attached to the other characters as much. Johnny was cool but I felt like I didn't get to know him well enough. I wasn't quite sure of what to think of Mirren, and I just wasn't a big fan of Gat. The aunts, the mom, and the granddad weren't likable at all. I don't think we were meant to like them though. That was kind of the point.

The writing style in this book took some getting used to, but once I did, I fell in love with it. It is so unique and fresh. E. Lockhart uses many metaphor-type scenes to really illustrate how Cadence was feeling. If you've read this book, you understand what I mean. It really confused me at first, but after a while, it was just... wow....

I was kind of spoiled for the end, but it still deeply affected me. I felt so sorry for Cadence and the rest of her family. I thought I was going to cry, but I kept it together.

This is the kind of book that you want to go into without knowing much about it. You don't want to be spoiled at all and you don't want to be overhyped. You need to appreciate the book for what it is, not for what other people say about it.

I give this book 4 ½ stars and I plan on rereading it in the future so that I can catch all of the foreshadowing I missed!

I recommend this book for everyone 14 and up. While the sexual content was lower than I expected, there is language. The whole theme of the book also feels more mature so I wouldn't recommend it for middle schoolers.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!

Challenge: Book Spine Poetry

It's the morning of the Bout of Books Read-a-Thon Day 2 and I have done absolutely no reading so far today. I did, however, start reading The Fault in Our Stars last night!

Anyway, the challenge today is to make a poem out of the titles of books. You are allowed an extra word for every book you choose (those will be in bold). The poem has to be at least 3 books long. If you want the full list of rules click here and the link will take you to the blog.

So here is my poem!

Matilda, The Giver,
Left Behind
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe,
And now,
Because of Winn-Dixie,
Dorothy Must Die,
In cold blood,
at,
Fahrenheit 451

This poem was so much fun to make! I wasn't sure if I had enough books, but I'm proud of how this turned out. Stay tuned for my day 2 update and more challenges!

Bout of Books 11.0 TBR

I know I said in my last post that I wasn't going to do a TBR for the Bout of Books Read-a-Thon, but I changed my mind.

I do have a tentative list that I can work my way through if time allows.

1. We Were Liars

I've actually already gotten through this book, but I was planning on reading it for Bout of Books.

2. The Fault in Our Stars

That's right. I haven't read it yet. I was number 845 on the hold list at the library last time I checked, but today I found it available on the Kindle library. I'm planning on starting this one next and I can't wait!

3. Rebel Belle

There was so much hype surrounding this book when it came out and that was probably one of the reasons I didn't read it. I have a tendency to never read hyped up books. I just can't do it! Now that the hype has died down, I'm ready to read this book!

4. The Break Up Artist

My friend, Lune Lenore Violette, recommended this book over on her blog and it sounds so interesting.

5. Out of Sight, Out of Time

This is the fifth book in the Gallagher Girls series which is one of my favorite YA series' ever. I am really looking forward to this book. These books don't take long to read at all so I'll probably be able to fly through it.

6. The Arctic Incident: The Graphic Novel

I've read the first two books in the Artemis Fowl series and have reviewed the second one. This is the graphic novel edition. Graphic novels are great for read-a-thons or just when your really busy because they don't take that long to read. I'm really excited to see how they draw some of the scenes in this book!

7. The Plain Janes

This is one more graphic novel. I don't know a ton about it except that it sounds good!

So that is all for my Bout of Books TBR. I probably won't get through all of these but these are the books that I will be choosing from.

I'll see you in my next post!

So long!

Hannah Claire

Challenge: Playlist

Bout of Books has several challenges that you can do and possibly win books and stuff like that for doing them.

This is the playlist challenge.

You can see all of the rules if you click on the link above. Basically, I make a playlist for one of the books I plan on reading for Bout of Books.

I chose We Were Liars because I just finished it. Here are my songs.

1. Safe & Sound (from Hunger Games)
2. Trouble is a Friend
3. Say Something
4. Story of My Life
5. In Summer
6. Bohemian Rhapsody

I had a lot of fun doing this challenge. Stay tuned for more!

Bout of Books 11.0 Update 1

Hello everyone! Today is the first day of the Bout of Books Read-a-Thon 11.0.

I did not do a TBR for this read-a-thon for two reasons. The first being that I forgot, and the second being that I start my AP English class at my high school on Wednesday. This is my first real exposure to public school life and I know this class will be difficult. I don't know how much reading I will be able to get done and how much reading I will be required to do for the class this week if any. So I'm just going to read whenever I can and whatever I want to.

Today I managed to finish the last 37 pages of We Were Liars by E. Lockhart (yes, her last name is Lockhart!).

I really enjoyed it even though I was kind of spoiled for the twist ending. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for something different in their contemporaries or books in general. It's best to go into it without knowing much and without being spoiled.

I have some Abide With Him work to do, tennis practice this afternoon, and plenty of things to do for school so I don't know how much more reading I will get done today.

I do need to finish reading The Elements of Style, which is pretty much a guide to the English language, before Wednesday, and it would be great if I could finish it today.

If I do have any extra time today I will start reading Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins, The Break Up Artist by Philip Siegel, or the fifth book in the Gallagher Girl series by Ally Carter.

I hope to be posting on here again today to do the challenges (or at least one) for today.

So long!

#AYEARATHON -Day 2

Day 2 was tough. Just saying. After staying up late finishing The Catcher in the Rye and waking up at 5:30 to go to the gym, I was exhausted. Not to mention that I had piano and we were having people over that night.

I say all that to say that day 2 was not a fantastic reading day.

I decided to start another one of the books that I have to read for school which was Fahrenheit 451. I'm not enjoying it very much so it isn't going too fast. I also started reading The Scarlet Pimpernel with Lune Lenore Violette. I'm taking it kind of slow. It is so good and I've only read the first chapter!

Day 2 progress

books finished total: 1

books currently reading: 2

pages read today: 52

pages read total: 190

I'm hoping to get most of the way through Fahrenheit 451 on day 3 and get through 2 more chapters of The Scarlet Pimpernel.

See you tomorrow!

Book Review: The Arctic Incident by Eoin Colfer

Artemis is at boarding school in Ireland when he
suddenly receives an urgent video e-mail from Russia. In
it is a plea from his father, who has been kidnapped by
the Russian Mafiya. As Artemis rushes to his rescue, he is
stopped by Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon fairy
police. But this time, instead of battling the fairies, he is
going to have to join forces with them if he wants to save
one of the few people in the world he loves.

I have been putting off starting this book for a long time. I didn't really enjoy the first book (which was featured in the first Throwback Thursday post) and I wasn't excited about starting this one. I read the first one back in 2012 and I didn't know how easy it would be to get into this series again. Last week though, I was in the mood for some fantasy. I felt that that could only be cured by a good dose of Artemis Fowl. I was not disappointed.

This book was so much better than the first book. I loved all the characters (especially Foaly!) and it seemed so fast paced. We really saw Artemis's weaknesses when he was dropped in the arctic without a computer. Butler was awesome as always and I now have a new found love for Root. I don't like Mulch in general. He was so annoying in the first book and wasn't much better in this one. I did, however, enjoy the story of him stealing Oscars.

I think the biggest problem that I had with the first book was that they were focusing too much on Holly for a book entitled ARTEMIS FOWL! In this book, Holly and Artemis are together which I enjoyed quite a bit. They had a couple of cute moments, especially at the end.

Opal was a great villain and I really like her. Cudgeon, on the other hand, is just annoying. I mean, why does he even have to be there?! I can't believe Opal put up with him. I can't wait to see what Opal is planning next!

The ending did seem a bit rushed, but that was okay. I was kind of looking for a quick read at the time and this was the perfect book. At the end we are given another sneak peek into Artemis's life at boarding school which is always funny.

I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to anyone middle school and up!

Book Review: This Star Won't Go Out by Esther Earl and family

A collection of the journals, fiction, letters, and sketches of the late

Esther Grace Earl, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 16.

Photographs and essays by family and friends will help to tell

Esther’s story along with an introduction by award-winning

author John Green who dedicated his #1 bestselling novel The Fault

in Our Stars to her.

Wow. I really don't know what I can say in this review but wow. This is a nonfiction book and I don't read a ton of those. I really enjoy memoir-style books and I loved how this one was just a collection of different things from different places. This included diary entries, blog posts by her and her parents, pictures that she drew, photos, and letters. I loved how so many people added things to this book. Esther and her parents wrote most of it  but Esther's online friends, sisters, brothers, John Green, and many other people contributed as well.

I loved seeing the impact that Esther had on people. It reminded me so much of a girl I knew named Jenae' McNichols. She was just a beautiful person who made room in her heart for everyone. I went on YouTube and watched some of Esther's videos and she seems like an incredibly sweet person.

Esther was a Christian and that was something that I really liked about this book. If she hadn't been, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this book nearly as much. Instead I would have been crying the entire time because she wasn't in heaven.

Even though Esther was a Christian, this was not a completely clean book. It was still a whole lot better than most YA novels are today. Esther did recount a time when she got drunk and how she really wants her first kiss. For that last part though, who could blame her? She was dying of cancer! There were a few innuendos here and there and a bit of language, but still a lot cleaner than most books.

The only thing that took away from my enjoyment of this book was that I'm not a John Green fan. I've never read one of his books. Esther was a huge John Green fan and nerd fighters are referenced quite a bit. I really want to read The Fault in Our Stars which John Green dedicated to Esther now!

Esther was a huge Harry Potter fan as well and that was exciting. I loved hearing her fangirl about leakycon and Wizard Rock bands. I guess that was another thing I loved so much about Esther, she was a fangirl just like me.

All in all, I gave this book 5 stars and recommend it to anyone 12 and up. This is a story you won't forget.

Top 5 Friday: Favorite Books

I have a hard time choosing favorites when it comes to books. However, I thought I'd do it just this once.

5. The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

I've read this book more than any other and I love it just as much every time.

4. Animal Farm by George Orwell

I was really surprised in how much I enjoyed this book. It was just incredible.

3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I don't even know why I enjoyed this book so much, but I did. I read it in 7th grade (should have waited a year!) and didn't want to put it down.

2. The Help by Kathryn Stockett

This book made me really understand racism for the first time. This is definitely the most mature book I've ever read, but it was undeniably worth it!

You probably can guess what book comes next.

1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusack

From the first page, I knew I was going to love this book. It took me a while to finish, but it was so worth it. It was also the first book that made me cry for a decent reason (Mockingjay doesn't count!).

Honorable Mention: This Star Won't Go Out by Esther Earl and family

I am not even done with this book and it is already becoming a favorite. This is easily my favorite nonfiction book ever.

I hope you enjoyed this Top 5 Friday (I haven't done one in forever!)

What are your top 5 books?

So long!

Throwback Thursday: Book Edition (#1)

I thought I'd do this today so that I could talk about books that I read a while back. I'm kind of modeling this after The YA Bookworm Blogger's Memory Lane Mondays.

This week's book is...

Artemis Fowl!

Author: Eoin Colfer

series or standalone: the first in this series!

favorite character and why: Artemis Fowl, he's just so smart!

least favorite character and why: I don't like Mulch Diggums. Enough said.

What I thought about this book: I didn't really like this book. I just wasn't in the mood and I felt that this book just dragged on and on.

Will I read the second book?: I already did! I felt in the mood to read it recently and absolutely loved it! I will be posting a book review soon.

best quote: It's been a really long time (2012!) since I've read this book, so I had to look up quotes on GoodReads. This is my favorite quote that I could find.

"Captain Short's life is in danger, so push the button before I climb that tower and push it with your face!”

So that was the first book edition of Throwback Thursday.

Tell me what you thought about it in the comments below!

So long!

Let's Talk Book Covers (#1)

We all judge books by their covers.

Face it.

We do.

I'd like to take this time and share with you some of my favorite covers.

I plan on making this a weekly thing.

I'll show you the cover,

tell you why I like the cover,

and tell you a little bit about the book!

Let's get started.

I have been in love with the cover of The Invention of Hugo Cabret ever since I first saw it.

It's just so beautiful!

I love artistic and intricate covers like these.

This book follows a twelve year old boy named Hugo who is trying to fix his father's automaton.

He lives in the walls of the train station fixing the clocks.

The automaton creates this mystery which he solves with the help of his friend Isabelle and others they meet along the way.

This is probably my 5th favorite book ever and definitely my most read book.

I hope you enjoyed my first "Let's Talk Book Covers" post!

So long!

Library Haul (#4)

I realized that I haven't done one of these posts in a while, so here is my fourth library haul!

1. One False Note by Gordon Kormann

I checked this out a while back but never read it. I'm really interested in finishing this series.

2. The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner

When the librarian saw that I checked out Shadow Future she instead that I check out this book. I'm not sure if I will read it, but I may.

3. I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter

This is another book that I just haven't gotten to. I cannot wait to read this book!

4. Inside the Shadow City (Kiki Stike 1) by Kirsten Miller

Lune Lenore Violette really likes this series so I just had to get it.

5. Storybook of Legends by Shannon Hale

This is definitely a girly middle grade novel. The cover and pages are rather nauseating but I am kind of interested in the story.

6. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

I've heard so many good things about Patrick Ness and this looks like a really good book. Unfortunately, upon further research I probably won't read this one.

7. The Shadow Throne by Jennifer A. Nielson

This is the final book in the Ascendance Trilogy. I absolutely loved the first two books and I can't wait to read this one!

8. Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry

I just posted my review of The Giver by Lois Lowry and this is supposed to be the second book in the series. It is technically a companion novel which I am pretty upset about, but I really need to give it a try.

9. The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice 1) by John Flanagan

I have several friends who love this series so I thought I would give it a try.

10. This Star Won't Go Out

This is a nonfiction book about a girl named Esther who died in 2010 from thyroid cancer. I have already started this book and it is incredible! I am a third of the way through it and I already recommend it to everyone!

11. Wonder by R. J. Palacio

I started the first couple of pages and wasn't a huge fan of this book. I'm really hoping that it is going to get better because I just got sent The Julian Chapter by NetGalley and I need to read Wonder first.

12. Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough

After reading Harry Potter years and years ago, I am still intrigued by this world of magic and that is why I picked up this book

13 and 14. The Hunger Games and Catching Fire movie guides

This is pretty much explanatory.

I hope you enjoyed this library haul.

I am planning on doing a NetGalley haul soon!

Leave a comment below telling me which book you think I should read first!

So long!
